In Kundalini Yoga, “the knots” are called granthis (Sanskrit granthi = knot or psychic blockage). They are subtle energetic locks in consciousness that restrict the upward movement of Kundalini Shakti through the central channel (Sushumna Nadi).
Traditionally there are three major knots, each tied to a level of human identity and spiritual limitation.
THE THREE KUNDALINI KNOTS
1 - Brahma Granthi - the bottom knot
2 - Vishnu Granthi - the middle knot
3 - Rudra Granthi - the top knot
Each knot represents a level of illusion (Maya) that consciousness must untie for spiritual awakening.
THE BOTTOM KNOT - BRAHMA GRANTHI
The Brahma Granthi sits at the base of the spine near the Muladhara and sometimes extends to the Svadhisthana.
It is the knot of physical existence.
What it represents
This knot binds consciousness to:
1 - Survival instinct
2 - Fear of Death
3 - Attachment to the body
4 - Sexual energy and reproduction
5 - Material Identity (“I am this body”), this is why I say never say “I am God” or “I AM”
6 - Tribal or animal consciousness
It is essentially the gravity of incarnation
In mythology it is linked to Brahma, the creator deity, because this knot binds consciousness into creation and matter.
ENERGETIC MEANING
When Kundalini is dormant, energy circulates mostly in the lower chakra’s.
The Brahma Granith acts like a knot in the rope, preventing energy from rising into higher awareness.
When it loosens or breaks:
1 - Kundalini leaves the root
2 - The central channel (Sushumna) opens
3 - Awareness expands beyond purely physical identity
This often marks the beginning of spiritual awakening.
SIGNS THE BOTTOM KNOT IS OPENING
People sometimes report:
1 - Heat or vibration at the base of the spine
2 - Spontaneous body movement (kriya’s)
3 - Intense dreams
4 - Emotional purging of fear or trauma
5 - Surge of sexual energy transforming into spiritual energy
6 - Feeling energy rising up the spine
The process can feel like a coil unwinding.
YOGIC METHODS TO UNITE THE KNOT
Traditional yogic practices used to include :
1 - Mula Bandha (root lock)
2 - Kundalini Yoga
3 - Pranayama
4 - Mantra
5 - Meditation on the root chakra
These practices focus energy into the root energy into the root and force Kundalini upward.
PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION
The Brahma Granthi corresponds to overcoming:
1 - Primitive fear
2 - Instinctive drives
3 - Attachment to physical security
4 - Identification with ego body
In modern psychological language , it is like transcending the animal survival mind.
GNOSTIC INTERPRETATION (INTERESTING PARALLEL)
In a Gnostic , the bottom knot resembles the grip of the material cosmos ruled by Archons.
Breaking the knot means:
1 - consciousness escapes pure material identification
2 - the divine spark begins to ascend.
This parallels the awakening of Sophia within the human being.
In simple terms
The bottom knot is the lock of incarnation
When it opens:
1 - Kundalini awakens
2 - consciousness begins rising
3 - spiritual evolution truly begins.
Notes from my journal :
When we practice pranayama, left and right nostril breathing, kundalini arises naturally from the base of the spine. This is the easiest way to awaken kundalini. The serpent energy moves upward but does very little or so, it seems. Every so often, she makes a dash for the crown, waking you up at 4 am with a headache. This can go on for a long time. So why doesn’t this awakening go any further?
At the bottom of the spine there is an entrance to the central channel which is blocked by a knot. This knot prevents activation until the time is right. You can cleanse and make changes to the inner system but this knot prevents the unprepared from the full power of Gnosis of the serpent goddess. Why you ask ?
The answer is this , because you will have all your dreams, agendas, personal stuff removed instantly which will leave you raw and you will be thrown deep in the independent raw power of the Goddess of mysteries.
