Kundalini: the Cross-Disciplinary Spirit Fire
Kundalini is a Sanskrit term meaning “coiled one.” Originating in ancient India, Kundalini is energy or consciousness said to arise from the base of the spine where trapped since birth. It is synonymous with the life force energy pervasive in all beings, further known as prana, chi, and bio-energy. Yogic science maintains that kundalini energy triggers the development of the fetus in the womb, and subsequently wraps around the base of the spine three and a half times to lock the energy field in stasis until death, at which time it unwraps and rejoins its source. Kundalini may uncoil and ascend from the base of the spine due to spiritual practices, as adherents commonly believe, or perhaps in response to circumstances in life, which some yogis find an absurdity since they do not allow for spontaneous awakening. Nonetheless, as kundalini wakes up, it uncoils like a snake and ascends through the stomach, heart, and head.
Recognition of this spiritual principle appears in a variety of religious and philosophical traditions, including yoga and tantra, esotericism, mysticism, occultism, Gnosticism, Native American teachings, Tantric Buddhism, Taoism, and the precepts of other indigenous societies. Alchemy and yoga, for example, share similar goals, and to that end, alchemy sometimes presents as “Western yoga.” By bringing the two nadis—subtle energy channels—called pingala (masculine) and ida (feminine) into mindful harmony, the alchemical yogi arouses the sleeping serpentine energy that climbs through the susumna nadi, or central column, and unseals the chakras. As the serpent power arrives at the uppermost chakra, the yogi encounters the bliss of absolute consciousness identified with Brahman, the imperishable, ultimate cosmic consciousness.
In Freemasonry, CHiram, who is the Master of the Builders, symbolically equates with kundalini insofar as CHiram represents the Spirit Fire that moves through the sixth ventricle of the spinal column. The Lost Key of Freemasonry is precisely the science of human regeneration that takes place when the Spirit Fire lifts thirty-three degrees, or spinal segments, to enter the vaulted compartment of the skull, where it lastly accesses Isis, the pituitary body, invokes Ra, the pineal gland, and petitions the Sacred Name. Additionally, the mystic Christian Mason views CHiram as the Christ who, in three days or degrees, resurrected His bodily temple from its terrestrial tomb. It should come as no shock then that when Moses made a brazen snake and set it upon a pole to save all those who looked toward it, it allegorically referenced the everlasting work of Christ who also elevated for the same purpose.
